VBS UK has successfully completed two forms of glass treatment at the Royal National College for the Blind in Hereford.
Looking for a way to reduce solar heat gain through large window units to the new Access Centre reception area, two film types were discussed - high reflective Silver 20 and medium reflective Silver 35.
Relevant performance figures considered were:
Silver 20 Silver 35
Total Solar Energy Rejection 77% 67%
Glare Reduction 81% 65%
Visible Light Transmission 17% 31%
After comparing performance figures of the two films, it was decided that Silver 35 was the preferred choice. Silver 35 strikes a balance, allowing more light to enter the building whilst only sacrificing 10% of the total solar energy rejection and 15% glare reduction. So on warm, sunny days, it assists in maintaining a comfortable work environment and on overcast days, does not look too oppressive.
Furthermore, there was a mandatory requirement for manifestation of glazing to certain areas of the building which VBS UK was able to help meet by the application of two rows of frosted dots, 50mm diameter at 100mm centres. One row was applied at 1500mm from floor level and the other at 900mm. This enabled compliance with the requirements of Document M for glazed entrance doors and glazed screens.
